English course in Peterborough

Last 23rd June, 30 students from 4th ESO at our school had the great luck of enjoying a grant to attend a course in England. They went to Peterborough with the teachers Cándida Gallardo and Lola Aceituno. They lived with host families who were very nice to them and had lessons at World School. But what they enjoyed most were the activities such as travelling to London, Cambridge, Stamford or going to the cinema, to the bowling alley, to the swimming pool or visiting the cathedral or the museum at Peterborough. The best thing is that they have had the opportunity of speaking English and improving it a little bit.

Last 21st June we went for dinner to celebrate we have been together for four years. I think these four years of our bilingual adventure have been a success.
Thanks to your bilingual teachers, Esteban, Mª Jesús, Pablo, Juan José, Antonio for their enthusiam, hard work and dedication. Without them this wouldn't have been possible.
Thanks to our language assistants along these years, Greg, Sarah, Hilal, Geraldine, Antonietta, Mark, Chris, Jacqui and Julia. They have been great colaborators as well as friends.
Thanks to your French teacher, Diego, for his support and for having joined any suggestions and activities related to the bilingual project. Thanks to your tutor, Esther for being supportive and collaborative.
And a big THANKS to you for being wonderful students, enthusiastic, friendly, hard-working (most of the times) and patient. I hope next year we will be on board on a new boat: 1st Bach Bilingual. Those of you who are leaving, please, don't forget us. We will miss you a lot. Good luck in your new life!!

The Mystery Celebrity Game

This is a very famous show that was broadcast on CSB television in 1950 and ran for almost 18 seasons. The show features a panel of four celebrities that had to try to guess the job or occupation of an invited celebrity. The mysterious celebrity in this video is the surrealist artist Salvador Dali. The video is funny because Dali performs his own role perfectly, the comments are quite witty and everything is very "civilised" . Watch it paying special attention to the questions used and we'll play it in class. (Seen at THE ENGLISH BLOG)

As an activity for the English class, the students have invented their own business, they have written to a bank manager asking for a loan for their company and then our language assistant, Jacquie, acting as a bank manager, has interviewed them. We're Going to London in May!!!!

We are preparing our trip to London with different activities. We have sold Christmas cakes and lottery tickets to get some money. Then we have read a book called TRIP TO LONDON which has given us some idea of the city, its customs and curiosities. Finally we have a WIKI called "Going to London" in which ten groups of three student will be working on a specific topic, monument or place in this fantastic city. When they finish, they will record a presentation for the rest of the group as they will have to introduce their place, or monument when they are in London. Finally when all groups have finished, they will have to complete a QUIZ. It will be a competition.

Eratosthenes and the Measurement of the Earth's circumference

De Medición del radio de la tierra por 3º ESO Bilingüe

Last Thursday 26th March we did an experiment with our Bilingual teachers: we tried to measure the circumference of the Earth in the same way Eratosthenes did in the century II before Christ. He discovered then that the Earth was not flat.
We studied Eratosthenes's life in the English class, in Geography we learnt all the processes he followed until he calculated the radius of the Earth. In Maths we learnt some trigonometry, specifically tangents, to be able to measure the angle of the sun's shadow length. Finally, in the technology class we spent a week building a gnomon, or stick, to be able to measure the sun's shadow length every ten minutes when the sun rays were overhead.
We took the data and sent the results to an observatory centre in Barcelona.

At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of pandemic proportions.
There is a campaign launched by UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) to sign your name saying NO to violence against women.

International Women's Day

Next Saturday 8th March is International Women's Day. We are going to work on a Web Quest done by an English teacher called Elena González Guerrero from IES San Jose . We'll work in groups of five and we'll research on six women: Toni Morrison, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, Ada Augusta Byron, Marjorie Jackson Nelson, and Edmonia Lewis. One part of the group will research on their lives( biographers), a second part on their work (work researchers)and the third part on the cities where they spent most of their time (travel agents). After your research you will have to present your work orally. Good luck!!!!

Recipes day

Recipes day

Before Christmas we spent more than a week working on recipes in English and French. We learnt the specific vocabulary of cooking instructions and kitchen utensils. In the French class you cooked crêpes and in the English class you learnt about nutrients, the nutrition pyramid and how to eat healthy food. Our final task was to cook recipes originally written in French and English. The class was divided into eight team and each team cooked two recipes. There was a jury that voted for the most delicious dishes. The winners were Ismael Beltrán, Pablo Spearpoint and Jaime Vázquez and they had a present from the French and English Department: a pen drive for each one of them. Trip to Málaga to celebrate a meeting of Bilingual schools.

Encuentro Centros Bilingües Málaga

Last   November 14th the bilingual group ( 31 students) travelled to Málaga with the English teacher, Lola, the Music teacher, Miguel Ángel and one of our language assistants, Geraldine. We were going to meet our partner school Salvador Rueda, but only the 2nd ESO students. The trip was long and "noisy" (we were "delighted" by songs  not sung but screamed....). Our friends were waiting at the Alcazaba. They had prepared a questionnaire, divided in three parts, which the students had to fill in.  Although the Alcazaba is big, most groups could complete their work correctly. After that we started to "climb" towards Gibralfaro castle. The view was  incredible, the sea was calm and bright blue and there we had lunch and met the 3rd ESO students. In the end we were a group of more than 70 students and it was so difficult to move them..........!!!!!!! We saw the cathedral and  Picasso  square. Everybody had a wonderful time  and some students made good friends. The trip back was even noisier.  And I thought they were tired and were going to fall asleep....! No way!!!!!

They are great and some of them very original, but you should be careful with grammar when you write something that cannot be changed. Bilingual schools meeting

The 16th of April we celebrated a meeting with a bilingual school from Málaga called Salvador Rueda. They came by bus and we waited fot them at Plaza de España. We organized the groups with stickers of different colours. They had to work on a Gymkhana about different places in Seville: Plaza de España, Alcázar and Mª Luisa's Park. It was great fun to see the students looking for the answers running from one place to another, although at the Alcazar we made a lot of noise and a guide complained about us!!!!
After the visit to the Alcazar we had lunch at Murillo park. Some of the students had taken a ball with them and they started a football match Málaga vs Seville. It was very exciting for them and they enjoyed a lot. We couldn't finish the Gymkhana at Mª Luisa's park. It was too hot and they were too tired. In the end they all said goodbye sadly, some of them hugging and crying. We are planning to travel to Málaga next June.

European Language Portfolio

The European Language Portfolio is a document in which those who are learning or have learned a language - whether at school or outside school - can record and reflect on their language learning and cultural experiences.
We are using The ELP (PEL in Spanish)in our school for evaluation and self evaluation. This document was developed and piloted by the Council of Europe and it is a tool to develop plurilingualisn and pluriculturalism. We can situate our level in different languages according to the Common Levels of Reference (A1 / A2 / B1 /B2 C1 / C2) and at the same time we can refect on what type of learners we are, or how differently people speak our language or what languages we can listen around us.
We are working oral skills in the way you can see in the photograph.

We set goals and then prove we can do it.

First of ESO Bilingual students made a project called "The World in my school" to know the students who come from other countries, their languages and a little bit of their culture. . Here you can see some photographs of the project.

Etwinning project

Do you know Etwinning?

Etwinning is part of a European Programme which promotes inter-school partnership. The schools which become partners share an internet based class project. Last year we started an etwinning project with an English school from Gloucestershire. The name of our partner school is Chosen Hill School.

The Spanish teacher at Chosen Hill School is called Miss Elena Mai Evans. (Apparently "Elena" is the name of a Welsh queen). She visited our school last year and we organized and discussed our class project. Our students exchanged emails and posters about our cities and our countries.

Our language assistants

Thanks to the fact that we have a Bilingual Section at school we have three language assistants this year. They come from different countries and we are very happy to learn different things from them. Here you have them:
